Human rights
Until applications are finally determined refugee claimants have few legal rights and must rely largely on community and charity organisations.
As the Australian government is not responding appropriately to their needs, as a nation we are not responding to the international human rights commitment and responsibilities that Australia has made to provide refuge and provide the basic need for those who come to our shore seeking asylum from persecution.
Meanwhile, the genuine refugee claimant who has escaped fear and oppression continues to live with an uncertain future - without social security entitlement, some with no permission to work, others working hard at menial jobs, and suffering from being separated from family, familiar language, culture and surrounding.
Often these people are haunted by memories of intolerance cruelty and torture.
