About Us
About Us
We are a drop in centre that provides a range of services to clients including emotional support, English tuition, information and referral, some limited material support, food, and assistance with skills for finding accommodation, employment and healthcare.
Established in 1995 with a grant from the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, the Refugee Claimant Support Service provides critical support to refugee claimants (or asylum seekers) in the often extended period before their applications for protection are finally determined by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
The Service is operating as a program of UnitingCare Community. Whilst the Service receives no ongoing funding from either Federal or State Governments, we continue to receive ongoing support from the Sisters of the Good Shepherd as well as financial and non-financial support from other sources, notable: The Sisters of Mercy, Brisbane City Council, Franciscan Sisters, The Buderim Buddies, the Queensland Gaming Machine Benefit Fund, the West End Community, the Friends of Edmund, Wesley City Mission, Multicultural Affairs Queensland, our very much valued volunteers and some individual community members, not to mention the refugee claimants themselves.
If you are an asylum seeker in Queensland you can come and visit our centre in person for help on Mondays and Thursday 10.00 am - 3.00 pm (please ring 3357 9013 to make an appointment). We are located on 12 Bonython Street, Windsor, QLD 4030
"...a refugee claimant means somebody who has to suffer many pressures and many problems because of their status, we have nothing really and we can rest only at the moment when the government says 'Here is your visa'..."
