The Centre's work is grounded in the principles of social
justice, multicuturalism and community development. As much as possible refugee claimants
drive and participate in the work of the Centre. Services provided by the Centre
include a drop in centre, English tuition, emotional support, information and
referral, limited emergency relief, computer
skills, and assistance with accommodation, food, employment and health
care.
The Centre also provides
opportunities for group activities. Refugee Claimants, volunteers, staff
and friends often get together for a picnic or a camp.
Other activities include:
the creation of the mural that appears on the home page of this website,
the 'Scattered People' choir, creation of the 'Alone,
Together' book, regular parties and lunches at the Centre.
"Here
we can receive things that we do not have at this moment. In the darkness we cannot see a
lot of light. When we came to Australia we were afraid. At the Asylum Seekers Centre*, we
found peace, unconditional love and acceptance, friends; you feel their help, union of
people. We can change our vision of our situation, with this we can be and live
differently - live with hope."
